Why buy the Amazon’s Kindle Voyage 2?

The holiday is a time when you buy family and friends gifts. Why not give the best educational gift to someone, an ereader – the Kindle. If you do not have a Kindle, or you have one but it is a current or older version, wait. Amazon is launching its premium ereader and it will be worth the wait. The Kindle Voyager 2 is coming!

We all know and experience this for ourselves at how technology is accelerating at a rapid pace. While this is true of computers, iPad and other devices, as far as in the e-reader space, they develop new technology every 5 years for the chip and every 3 years for the screen.

It is said that two important pieces of technology go into an e-reader: the electronic ink screen and the system-on-a-chip, which provides the device’s screen clarity, refresh rate, processing power, wireless capabilities, battery endurance, and more.

An update to Kindle’s processor and chipset is imminent

The last time these technologies saw major improvements was in 2013 and prior to that it was in 2010. So you see the reason for buying the Kindle Voyage 2 in 2016 will lead to overall better value and a longer device life cycle.

The world’s first processor and chipset-purpose-designed for electronic ink display management called the i.MX5 was released in 2010. Then in 2011 it was marginally improved by the introduction of i.MX6. This allowed battery life to last 4 -6 weeks, faster page turns, and few jarring page refreshes.

Here are reasons why you must buy the Kindle Voyager 2

The Amazon Kindle Voyage 2 will redefine what an e-reader is capable of in a myriad of ways. It will utilize the new Freescale I.MX 7 1 GHZ dual core processor which will dramatically increase the overall performance. This chipset has been optimized with eInk Regal and the end product will be true refresh free page turns.

In 2016 this changes, the i.MX7 begins entering products which will be more power efficient than the previous generation of e-reader processors. For one thing, it’s built on the 28nm production process (almost half of the 40nm used in the older i.MX6), and smaller is better.

The i.MX7 also introduces a new kind of design called Heterogeneous Multicore Processing Architecture (HMPA), which allows two processor architectures to operate simultaneously. Unlike older processors, the i.MX7 uses two processing cores: one core has a Cortex A7 architecture while the other has a more power-efficient Cortex M4 architecture.

It will represent the single biggest leap in performance and battery life in e-reader history
It is believed that emergent technologies would enable full color e-readers. One of these technologies is called Electrowetting, a technology invented by Liquavista, a subsidiary of Amazon.

Hang in there, the new Kindle Voyage 2 is coming. It will be a better ereader and will be a great gift to give that special person.

Why Are Boys Not Reading Anymore?

I am sure you will agree with me that boys’ aversion to reading, let alone to novels, has been worsening for years. The question we ask, Why are boys not reading anymore? There are several reasons for boys not reading anymore.

Here are some reasons why boys do not like reading

• I have heard some say that boys do not like to explore their emotions and feelings and therefore do not like reading fiction.
• One expert states that boys also do not have enough male role models for literacy.
• Boys prefer video games and ESPN to book versions of them. It is said that these knockoffs also lack the tough, edgy story lines that allow boys a private place to reflect on the inner fears of failure and humiliation they try so hard to brush over.

What are some of the factors that contribute to boys not reading?

 boys not reading
Girls outpace boys in words read after grade 4

Are the publishers targeting boys? It seems that publishers focus more on girls. A leading publishing company executive said at least three-quarters of her target audience were girls, and they wanted to read about mean girls, gossip girls, and vampires.

Editors who ask writers of books for boys to include girl characters — for commercial reasons — further blunt the edges.

Also, if we are to encourage reading among boys they need to be approached individually with books that deals their fears, choices, possibilities and relationships — the kind of reading that will prick their dormant empathy. It is important as well to involve them with fictional characters and lead them into deeper engagement with their own lives. This is what turns boys into readers.

Now what type of books do boys gravitate toward? Nonfiction. Over the years, it seems that schools favor classics over contemporary fiction. This is because they try to satisfy testing standards and avoid challenges from parents. To add to the problem, teachers don’t always know what’s out there for boys.

It would be good to see someone like a Justin Bieber promote reading among boys. And since majority of adults involved in kids’ reading are women, boys might not see reading as a masculine activity.

In addition to including the important people such as parents, librarian, teachers and communities in providing a solution, says Jon Scieszka, author of children’s books, suggests strategies to help boys read better: “clear, structured instruction; short bursts of intense work; specific goals; praise; hands-on learning; and use of humor.”

Understanding boys and reading

If we are to encourage boys to read, we must understand them and what gets them to read. According to Smith and Wilhelm in Reading Don’t Fix No Chevys: Literacy in the Lives of Young Men, boys differ from girls in the choices they make of reading material:

• Boys are more inclined to read informational texts, magazines, and newspaper articles

• Boys are more inclined to read graphic novels and comic books

• Boys tend to resist reading stories about girls, whereas girls do not tend to resist
reading stories about boys

• Boys like to read about hobbies, sports, and things they might do or be interested
in doing

• Boys like to collect things and tend to like to collect series of books

• Boys read less fiction than girls

• Boys tend to enjoy escapism and humor, and some boys are passionate about
science fiction or fantasy

Here are some suggestions that librarians can take to improve attitudes toward reading among boys. These include:

• planning programs aimed just at boys

• doing book talks in the classroom that include a lot of nonfiction

• buying American Library Association Read posters that feature males

• encouraging coaches of boys’ sports teams to participate in a Guys Read program such as having athletes read to younger children

• increasing the number of periodicals, magazines, comic books, and newspapers in the library

• actively recruiting boys to work in the library

• surveying boys about their reading

• buying books that boys recommend

• putting books where the boys are: next to the computers, copy machines, and study tables. Allowing boys to find reflections of who they are and what they like in a library may encourage a return visit.

A new study in the UK found that youngsters who used the new technology were more likely to have their nose in a story for longer, were more likely to say that reading is “cool” and were less likely to find reading difficult. The findings show that boys had a bigger attitude change towards reading after picking up an ebook than girls.

“It is important to recognize the increased reading opportunities that technology offers pupils and how it can help children who struggle to read, for example by giving them the option of increasing the font size of the text. This study indicates that technology has most potential to engage children, particularly boys, who do not enjoy reading.” According to research eBooks can help to boost boys’ abilities in reading and encourage them to enjoy the subject.

It seems that as parents, librarians, and teachers, we have our work cut out for us. We have to recognize the challenges facing why boys not reading anymore and take steps to help them change their attitude about reading.

Use the Kindle for better eye and general health

There are reasons why it is important to use the kindle for better eye and general health. There are so many devices out there that one can use to read books. In one of my recent posts I wrote why the kindle is best for the eyes. At the end of the day, we like to look at the science before making any claims. Well, there are more and more studies that shows that reading the right device at night will prevent one from having health challenges, especially regarding the eyes.

Although there are other factors that contribute to eye and overall health challenges, staring at bright lights on iPhones and tablets play a role in our overall well-being according clinical psychologist and sleep therapist, Dr. Michael J. Breus. Studies have shown that all these artificial lights can result in disruptions of the circadian rhythm. (Cicadian means, “Recurring naturally on a twenty-four-hour cycle, even in the absence of light fluctuations”)

According to the experts, there’s a lot of evidence that blue light, emitted by smartphones, tablets, laptops, and many other electronic devices, is impacting on the quantity and quality of the sleep we are getting. Darkness is a natural cue to our bodies that it’s time for sleep.

What is Blue Light?Kindle Image.docx

It is said that blue is the color between violet and green on the optical spectrum of visible light. Human eyes perceive blue when observing light with a wavelength between 450 and 495 nanometers. (A nanometer is a unit of spatial measurement that is one billionth of a meter) Blues with a higher frequency and thus a shorter wavelength gradually look more violet, while those with a lower frequency and a longer wavelength gradually appear greener. Pure blue, in the middle, has a wavelength of 470 nanometers.

What’s the problem with Blue light?

Blue light tells our brain that it isn’t time to sleep. According to the experts: “There are about 30,000 cells inside your eye that are reactive to the wavelength of light which would be considered blue,” explains clinical psychologist and sleep therapist, Dr. Michael J. Breus. “Blue runs in about the 460 nanometer range, in terms of the spectrum of light. That particular spectrum of light hits these cells and makes them send a signal to an area of the brain known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus and tells it to turn off melatonin production. Melatonin is the key that starts the engine for sleep.” What we are doing by reading using bright screens at night is that we are circumventing this process. According to an expert, Burkhart K, Phelps JR.:

“All light is not equal: blue wavelengths are the most potent portion of the visible electromagnetic spectrum for circadian regulation. Therefore, blocking blue light could create a form of physiologic darkness. Because the timing and quantity of light and darkness both affect sleep, evening use of amber lenses to block blue light might affect sleep quality. Mood is also affected by light and sleep; therefore, mood might be affected by blue light blockade. In this study, 20 adult volunteers were randomized to wear either blue-blocking (amber) or yellow-tinted (blocking ultraviolet only) safety glasses for 3 h prior to sleep.”

At The New York Blue Light Symposium convened in New York from June 26-27, 2015, it outlined three measures to counter consequences of artificial illumination faced by the global community. They were:

– MEASUREMENT: Scientifically prove the effects of blue light on human health through coordination with global researchers.
– MANAGEMENT: Discuss blue light’s role in daily life and how to better manage consumption.
– EDUCATION: Educate and spread understanding about blue light’s place in society.

It is hoped that this article will play a role in educating the public about the effects of blue light and how to counteract it. It is hoped that we will recognize the consequences of exposure to artificial blue light at night and that we will cut out exposure to blue light before going to bed. (According to the experts, the ideal is 2 hours) They do say that since this is difficult to do in modern society, use of protective glasses is recommended to minimize exposure to blue light at night. Other steps includes, beyond turning off all the light sources, use special filters, glasses, light bulbs, and even special software.

What to do at night when we want to read and still maintain good eye and general health?

So the question is what to do at night when we want to read that will help us maintain good eye and general health. Well, Amazon is bringing a brand new feature called Blue Shade — which alters display color and brightness for optimal nighttime reading — to its line of Fire tablets that will help in this regard.

“Blue Shade uses specialized filters to limit exposure to blue light. It also offers warm color filters and the ability to lower the display brightness to an ultra-low level for comfortable nighttime reading—even in a dark room,” Amazon said in an emailed statement. “Customers can also fine-tune the color settings to their personal preference, with the device intelligently adjusting the color filtering so that at any color or brightness, the blue wavelength light is always suppressed.”

So if you are an avid reader, and you love reading at night, and you are concerned about the health of your eye and general health, know that the bright light emitting from your device can, over a long period of time, will not contribute to healthy eyes and general health.

Top rated Kindle e-books for researchers

e-books for researchersThere were no top rated Kindle e-books for researchers during my academic writing days. When I completed high school, I never thought that I would end up degrees that required so much of research and academic writing. Like many of you, I never thought that I would get through writing papers all those research papers. As I mentioned, back in the day, I did not have an e-book for researchers.

During my undergraduate studies, I struggled as I was not excited about what I was writing about. Thanks to a professor in my graduate studies who gave me the tools to put together a quality thesis as well as many others along the way that contributed to my success. Because of this, I went on to complete my degrees and now enjoy writing.

When it comes to academic writing, it is important to know what is expected of you. If those expectations are not met, one can loose marks that can affect  ones grades. Below are two top rated eBooks for researchers that will help anyone struggling with academic writing.

E-books for Researchers – Manual for Writers

I know that there are many out there who, like me at the beginning of my studies, did not have a clue about how to write academic papers or perhaps did not have the motivation to do so. Thanks to Kate L. Turabian’s Manual for Writers, students like me and countless others have benefited from her book.  This book now in its 8th edition continues to be the gold standard for generations of college and graduate students in virtually all academic disciplines. Of the 243 reviews on Amazon, it received a 4.5 star rating. It is a great manual for writers.

The good news is that Manual for Writers has a Kindle version and so you can get your very own on Kindle.

How will this top rated book assist you with your writing?

If you are a student who struggle with writing because you have a hard time getting started and feel overwhelmed by this task or reasons such as:

  • You struggle to organize and use mechanics of writing.
  • You feel inefficient in retrieving the right word(s) to express an idea.
  • You struggle to develop your ideas fluently (poor ideation).
  • You struggle to keep track of your thoughts while also getting them down on paper.
  • You feel that the process of writing on paper is slow and tedious
  • You feel that the paper never turns out the way you want.
  • You realize that the paper is still sloppy even though substantial time and effort were spent.

To have these e-books for researchers will make life so easy as it will help overcome the struggles mentioned above.

Another great book, How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing (Lifetools: Books for the General Public) will be of great help as it provides very practical help to writers. This is one two great e-books for researchers.

The author,Paul J. Silvia explains that writing productively does not require innate skills or special traits but specific tactics and actions. Drawing examples from his own field of psychology, he shows readers how to overcome motivational roadblocks and become prolific without sacrificing evenings, weekends, and vacations. After describing strategies for writing productively, the author gives detailed advice from the trenches on how to write, submit, revise, and resubmit articles; how to improve writing quality; and how to write and publish academic work

Please feel free to share your experience about academic writing.

11 Best Reasons Why Self Publishing Makes Sense

Self PublishingIf you read about the 11 best reasons why self publishing makes sense, you will, I am certain will consider taking this option. In today’s world just about everything is more convenient and accessible due to advances in technology across almost all sectors.  The internet is one such technology.  The Internet is a vast source of information that is accessible from almost anywhere on the planet. There are, as we all now, has its fair share of dangers. However, the benefits/positives far outweigh the negatives. With the increase of mobile devices many are using them to read e-books.

E-book readers who own tablets or e-readers such as the Kindle are very likely to read e-books on their devices. And as tablet and e-reader ownership levels have risen over the past few years, these devices have become more prominent in the e-reading landscape:

Thousands of people are recognizing the power of  utilizing technology to self-publish their own articles and books. They are turning to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).

Let’s look at the 11 best reasons why self publishing makes sense on KDP:

  1. It does not cost you to publish.
  2. Your book will be on display on the largest book selling company in the world. Amazon sells more books than all the other publishers combined.
  3. It’s quick. There is no waiting period for agents to return feedback etc. You have access to an account which you set up with amazon where you can upload your book and it’s ready for the Kindle stores to sell to customers world-wide within 12 hours or less.
  4. According to a Pew E-book survey in 2012, twenty percent of Americans were reading electronically and in 2015 that percentage is growing.
  5.  Also, it is reported that  e-book reading devices are spreading through the population. Some 42% of adults now own tablet computers.
  6. You receive 70% of the list price of your book. If the book is priced between $2.99 and $9.99; otherwise 35%. (Generally publishers give you 10-15%)
  7. To boost sales, you can raise or lower the price of your e-book. You have access to stats and you can make appropriate changes to boost sales.
  8. Royalty payments are paid every month (one month’s delay)
  9. The largest company in the world, amazon promotes your book.
  10. You’re in control. You control the whole process from start to finish and retain all the rights to your book.
  11. Amazon through its Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has a feature where if you enroll in KDP Select, you earn money when people borrow your book, you can offer it free for up to 5 days out of every 90 as a promotion, and you can take advantage of other great Kindle promo ideas, like their Kindle Countdown Deals, and their Matchbook program, where, if readers buy or have bought the print version of your book, they can buy the e-book for free.

Given the reasons above, does it not make sense to consider self publishing?

Which is The Best Ereader for the Eyes – The Kindle PaperWhite or Kindle Voyage?

best ereader for the eyesBefore encouraging you to consider which is the best ereader for the eyes, I want to draw attention to the effect of working/reading using computer and LCD screens. Almost on a daily basis, we are either on our computers, ipads, ipads or tablets.

What effect does a bad ereader have on our eyes?

Staring at screens of these devices especially bad ereaders for too long can cause the following:

•  Eyestrain

  Eye fatigue

•  Blurry vision

  Dry eyes

  Trouble focusing at a distance

 Neck, back, and shoulder pain

•  Headaches

What can we do to minimize these effects?

Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it so that your feet are flat on the floor.

If you are using a computer, position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen.

•  Check that no direct light is not causing a glare. Some people may need glasses to help with contrast, glare, and eye strain. Try and get yourself an anti-glare screen if needed.

•   Ensure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date and adequate for computer use.

If your eyes are dry, try to blink more.

Every 20-25 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 10-15-minute break. This will lessen eye fatigue.

There other steps you can take in caring for your eyes such as quit smoking, use safety eye wear if working with hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home – wear safety glasses or protective goggles every time, and use sunglasses. You can also take care of your eyes when choosing an ereader.

Why the Kindle is the best eReader for the Eyes?

There are about 9 ereaders that you can choose from. The Kindle PaperWhite or Kindle Voyage are the best for the following reasons:

EReaders, like Kindle PaperWhite and Kindle Voyage have E Ink screens, (or electrophoretic) while tablets have LCD screens and this makes all the difference.

Reading on the Kindle is like reading a book. Books don’t provide the light, you do. This is why the Kindle is great in bright sunlight.

Ambient light from the environment is reflected from the surface of the display back to your eyes. As with any reflective surface, the more ambient light, the brighter the display looks.

LCD screens once had the edge when it came to reading in the dark as E Ink had a very low contrast ration. Guess what? The modern E Ink readers like the Kindle PaperWhite and Kindle Voyage an integrated light.

Taking care of the eyes is vitally important for one’s overall health. With so much time spent on devices, it is good to know that the Kindle, (especially the Kindle Voyage or Kindle Paper White) which according to amazon, is the best ereader for the eyes. They should be a must for those who read a lot.
