What makes a recipe great? When people who have followed these recipes and tell you of what they think about them is the best way to know whether these foods are great or not. In this post, I will be sharing the reviews of folks who have done just that. Below are reviews taken from amazon.com. I also looked at reviews that had top ratings. Here are the top 5 kindle version recipe books:

  1. Brunch at Bobby’s: 140 Recipes for the Best Part of the Weekend

This book is a bestseller. The author Bobby Flay has in this book 140 recipes starting with the lip-smacking cocktails, both spiked and virgin, that we have come to expect from him, along with hot and iced coffees and teas.

He then works his way through eggs; pancakes, waffles, and French toast (including flavored syrups and spreads); pastries (a first) and breads; salads and sandwiches; and side dishes. Pull up a seat and enjoy a Sangria Sunrise, Carrot Cake Pancakes with Maple-Cream Cheese Drizzle, Sautéed Bitter Green Omelets, and Wild Mushroom-Yukon Gold Hash.

“I took a cooking class that featured recipes from Brunch @ Bobby’s. The demonstration included a fabulous frittata topped with a mouth-watering cherry tomato sauce (p.108); a delicious fig, ham and cheese Panini (p.183) and very good churros (p.170). This book is doubly good in that we have another wonderful Bobby Flay cookbook to enjoy and one that targets breakfast, my favorite meal. Super recipes for traditional dishes include eggs, French toast, pancakes, and, of course, beverages for mid-morning blowouts abound. At least once, however, a recipe was included that probably wasn’t reviewed by the author: a tomato strata (p.218). The recipe looks good, but the write up stumbles. A strata is an baked egg dish made with cheese and French bread; and the write up recommends serving it as “a lovely side dish for poached or scrambled eggs”. Yeah right! Serve this egg dish as a side for eggs!” Robert K. Juul

“If you are a Bobby Flay fan or if you love breakfast food then you will love Brunch at Bobby’s. Any kinds of breakfast foods you can think of are covered. There are chapters for drinks, pancakes and waffles, eggs, pastries and breads, sandwiches, fruits, and sides. The recipes are on the more challenging side with many ingredients and many steps to complete. I think they will be worth the extra effort in the end. There are some unique and different recipes that look like they would be fun to try.

This is a beautiful cookbook. About half of the recipes have color photographs some of which are full-paged. A few interesting recipes that caught my eye include the carrot cake pancakes with maple cream cheese drizzle, the caramelized onion, spinach, and gruyere strata, and the bacon and hash brown quesadilla. You can see Bobby’s southwest style in a lot of the recipes. This is a wonderful cookbook for breakfast lovers.” plum5311

  1. The next book is Game-Day Fan Fare: Over 240 recipes, plus tips and inspiration to make sure your game-day celebration is a home run! (Everyday Cookbook Collection)

According to the author, Gooseberry Patch, the book starts with filling brunches like Goal-Line Sausage Casserole, Chocolate Chip Banana Pancakes and Pumpkin-Caramel Doughnut Holes. The author temps us to whip up some Slow-Cooker Buffalo Chicken Nachos, Pepperoni Bread and Beer-Battered Fried Veggies just before kick-off to keep them cheering for more. You will agree with the author that everyone will love a Spicy Italian Sausage Sub to go with their big, steamy bowl of White Chicken Chili.

Here are the reviews:

“I like this cookbook very much. It has excellent recipes to serve to a bunch of football fans as well as to serve to family. I ordered 2 by mistake so I gave the extra copy to a young granddaughter who was looking for recipes to serve to her friends. She was thrilled with it. I love, love, love Gooseberry Patch cookbooks. They fit my preference very well. Thanks Amazon for bringing so many of them to me at great prices.” Dilemma

“Love this recipe cookbook and tips for tailgate, picnic, and summertime parties. Easy to follow recipes enjoy planning events from the ideas given. Glad I ordered this one.” B. Jonas

“Another exceptional book from Gooseberry patch. This book is as much fun to read as it is to use. All recipes are clearly written and directions are easy to follow. This would make a great gift for sports fans and foodies!” Rose

  1. Our Favorite Game Day Recipes (Our Favorite Recipes Collection) Spiral-bound – January 6, 2012

This recipe book is also by Gooseberry Patch. And according to the author: There are 60 zesty recipes for your tailgating party, block party or anytime. There’s Sweet & Salty Pretzel Snacks and Fashioned Kettle Corn for munching with Zesty Bean Salsa and Cheese Dip. Included are also Garlicky Green Chili or Crawfish-Corn Chowder, honey-Molasses Wings, Cranberry Cocktail Sausages and Sweet & Spicy Pork Ribs.  For dessert, there’s Spicy-Hot Brownies and Balls with Fudge Sauce.

Here’s what customers are saying:

“Loved the recipes! Game Day recipes are fantastic for the football crowd, baseball crowd, and even the soccer crowd. Great book.” LORI YARBROUGH

  1. Favorite Recipes: Game Day Paperback – April 9, 2012

This book is written by two authors, Patti Fredericksen Colt and Tiffany Aller.

From the Back Cover: Taste the lusciousness of bacon slow cooking with parmesan cheese and imbuing a club cracker with more flavor than you can imagine. Grab your favorite bag of corn chips and dip into flavorful and easy-to-home-make salsa, pico de gallo and guacamole. Learn how to make a barbeque sauce that you can use for some many other recipes.

Treat your game day guests to a party on the big screen AND in their plates. You won’t want to miss these recipes!

Here’s what customers are saying:

“What I liked most about this book is that all courses are covered. There are appetizers, soups & salads, sauces & dips, side dishes, main courses and of course, desserts. Instead of bringing the same old thing to the party, this book actually gives you a ton of cool recipes that really stand out. I bought this book because we do a lot of potluck tailgating during baseball and football season. During baseball season this year, we brought a different recipe from this book to each game. We got tons of compliments every time…the day after the game we would get emails and phone calls asking for the recipe. I guess that’s the true judge of whether or not your recipe is good. My favs are the boneless Buffalo wings, the worth a damn spareribs and the BLT salad…and the kids (and adults) absolutely LOVE the mudd dessert.” B. Matthews

“I got this book yesterday and I can already say “WOW!” The directions are clear, specific, and detailed, and the recipes seem to have been designed with busy families in mind. I tried the Buttermilk Southern Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Fries yesterday. I have to eat gluten-free, and the fried chicken batter was a cinch to modify using the measurements given. Melt-in-your-mouth delicious, without being labor intensive or difficult to prepare- which is key when you’re getting ready for game night! It’s hard getting my kids to eat, but they love the recipes already. Today I’m making the buffalo chicken wings and they already smell amazing. This is a great recipe collection to have handy if you’ve had a long day at work and need something to feed an impatient family fast! I can’t wait to try the bacon chicken bites…” Ariana R.

  1. Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill Cookbook: Explosive Flavors from the Southwestern Kitchen Hardcover – Illustrated, October 16, 2007

In this recipe book, Flay includes the following:

– Grilled Asparagus and Goat Cheese Quesadillas with Tomato Jam and Cilantro Yogurt

– Queso Fundido with Roasted Poblano Vinaigrette

– Sweet Potato and Roasted Plantain Soup with Smoked Chile Crema

– Grilled Shrimp Brushed with Smoked Chile Butter and Tomatillo Salsa

– Seared Tuna Tostado with Black Bean Mango Salsa

– Coffee-Rubbed Filets Mignons with Ancho-Mushroom Sauce

– Spicy Coconut Tapioca with Mango and Blackberries

Flay describes his recipes as smoky, earthy, fruity, and spicy.

Here’s what customers are saying:

“This is one of my new favorites. The results have been extremely good. Some recipes are relatively fast to make while the super tasty duck taco recipe involves making 3 different sauces. However, once some of the sauces are made, they can be frozen and used in other recipes shortening the cooking time. Some of the green sauces work really well on salads. The ingredients are authentic and readily available in my home town of Houston. The use of blue cornmeal in pancakes give a great text and flavor boost along with visual appeal. The green pea soup green chili soup is excellent, but it appears that the mint-cumin crema calls for way too much cumin, especially compared to other version of the cumin crema in the book. Although some recipes take some effort, the results are worth and will impress your dinner guests. I’m working my way through the various recipes.” Patrick P. Davis

“Having been a customer at the Mesa Grill, I was anxious to read the book and see if I could do some of the food at home. Each recipe has a small note written by the author giving some background or suggestion about it. Each of the dishes have detailed and easy to follow instructions so anyone can prepare them and have it come out like they should. The only problem someone might have is if they do not have access to some ingredients in their local area, but a creative cook can substitute. A VERY GOOD BOOK, WELL WRITTEN.” J. Mckeown

11 Best Reasons Why Self Publishing Makes Sense

Self PublishingIf you read about the 11 best reasons why self publishing makes sense, you will, I am certain will consider taking this option. In today’s world just about everything is more convenient and accessible due to advances in technology across almost all sectors.  The internet is one such technology.  The Internet is a vast source of information that is accessible from almost anywhere on the planet. There are, as we all now, has its fair share of dangers. However, the benefits/positives far outweigh the negatives. With the increase of mobile devices many are using them to read e-books.

E-book readers who own tablets or e-readers such as the Kindle are very likely to read e-books on their devices. And as tablet and e-reader ownership levels have risen over the past few years, these devices have become more prominent in the e-reading landscape:

Thousands of people are recognizing the power of  utilizing technology to self-publish their own articles and books. They are turning to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).

Let’s look at the 11 best reasons why self publishing makes sense on KDP:

  1. It does not cost you to publish.
  2. Your book will be on display on the largest book selling company in the world. Amazon sells more books than all the other publishers combined.
  3. It’s quick. There is no waiting period for agents to return feedback etc. You have access to an account which you set up with amazon where you can upload your book and it’s ready for the Kindle stores to sell to customers world-wide within 12 hours or less.
  4. According to a Pew E-book survey in 2012, twenty percent of Americans were reading electronically and in 2015 that percentage is growing.
  5.  Also, it is reported that  e-book reading devices are spreading through the population. Some 42% of adults now own tablet computers.
  6. You receive 70% of the list price of your book. If the book is priced between $2.99 and $9.99; otherwise 35%. (Generally publishers give you 10-15%)
  7. To boost sales, you can raise or lower the price of your e-book. You have access to stats and you can make appropriate changes to boost sales.
  8. Royalty payments are paid every month (one month’s delay)
  9. The largest company in the world, amazon promotes your book.
  10. You’re in control. You control the whole process from start to finish and retain all the rights to your book.
  11. Amazon through its Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has a feature where if you enroll in KDP Select, you earn money when people borrow your book, you can offer it free for up to 5 days out of every 90 as a promotion, and you can take advantage of other great Kindle promo ideas, like their Kindle Countdown Deals, and their Matchbook program, where, if readers buy or have bought the print version of your book, they can buy the e-book for free.

Given the reasons above, does it not make sense to consider self publishing?

Which is The Best Ereader for the Eyes – The Kindle PaperWhite or Kindle Voyage?

best ereader for the eyesBefore encouraging you to consider which is the best ereader for the eyes, I want to draw attention to the effect of working/reading using computer and LCD screens. Almost on a daily basis, we are either on our computers, ipads, ipads or tablets.

What effect does a bad ereader have on our eyes?

Staring at screens of these devices especially bad ereaders for too long can cause the following:

•  Eyestrain

  Eye fatigue

•  Blurry vision

  Dry eyes

  Trouble focusing at a distance

 Neck, back, and shoulder pain

•  Headaches

What can we do to minimize these effects?

Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it so that your feet are flat on the floor.

If you are using a computer, position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen.

•  Check that no direct light is not causing a glare. Some people may need glasses to help with contrast, glare, and eye strain. Try and get yourself an anti-glare screen if needed.

•   Ensure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date and adequate for computer use.

If your eyes are dry, try to blink more.

Every 20-25 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 10-15-minute break. This will lessen eye fatigue.

There other steps you can take in caring for your eyes such as quit smoking, use safety eye wear if working with hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home – wear safety glasses or protective goggles every time, and use sunglasses. You can also take care of your eyes when choosing an ereader.

Why the Kindle is the best eReader for the Eyes?

There are about 9 ereaders that you can choose from. The Kindle PaperWhite or Kindle Voyage are the best for the following reasons:

EReaders, like Kindle PaperWhite and Kindle Voyage have E Ink screens, (or electrophoretic) while tablets have LCD screens and this makes all the difference.

Reading on the Kindle is like reading a book. Books don’t provide the light, you do. This is why the Kindle is great in bright sunlight.

Ambient light from the environment is reflected from the surface of the display back to your eyes. As with any reflective surface, the more ambient light, the brighter the display looks.

LCD screens once had the edge when it came to reading in the dark as E Ink had a very low contrast ration. Guess what? The modern E Ink readers like the Kindle PaperWhite and Kindle Voyage an integrated light.

Taking care of the eyes is vitally important for one’s overall health. With so much time spent on devices, it is good to know that the Kindle, (especially the Kindle Voyage or Kindle Paper White) which according to amazon, is the best ereader for the eyes. They should be a must for those who read a lot.

An Unborn Baby Learns While in the Womb

unborn babyDid you know that unborn baby learns while in the womb? I did some research and I found some interesting facts. A new study shows that the unborn baby not only hears his/her mom, but may understand her and is already learning language from her.

One mother shared about how, when she is shopping, she talks to her unborn baby. I guess her fellow shoppers probably thought that she was crazy. Far from it. In fact, what she is giving her baby is a foundation for language development.

It is believed that babies begin to absorb language when they are inside the womb during the last 10 weeks of pregnancy — which is earlier than previously held. I also discovered from my research that newborns can actually tell the difference between their mother’s native tongue and foreign languages just hours after they are born. So moms, remember that your unborn baby is listening, learning and remembering during the last stages of pregnancy.

If a mother sits in a movie theater with state-of-the-art sound or walks by a noisy construction site, odds are the fetus will react to all the noise by kicking or shifting around. It is said that around the seventh and eighth month, a fetus’s heart rate slows down slightly whenever his/her mother is speaking, indicating that mom’s voice has a calming effect. Experts says: “Mothers shouldn’t try putting earphones on their bellies and playing music because it’s already noisy in there,” The experts continues by saying, “Learning the mother’s voice and her vowels happens naturally as the mothers speak,”

It is suggested that mothers recognize the importance of not only to talking to their unborn child during the last trimester of pregnancy but to continue to talk to her newborn from the moment of birth to help facilitate language development.

What are the benefits of mom reading and talking to her unborn baby?

Here are 6 benefits for the unborn baby to learn in the womb:

1. It helps you bond with your unborn baby
2. Your voice has a calming and soothing effect on your unborn baby
3. When you are reading, you are relaxed and this relaxes your unborn baby.
4. Your unborn baby is beginning to learn language
5. Your unborn baby is getting to know your voice.
6. Your unborn baby is more likely to read after birth.

What a wonderful way of contributing to the development of an unborn baby. Not only does the mother provide the nutrition for the baby but has the ability to contribute to the baby by reading and talking to her unborn baby.

There are many resources out there, one is Windows to the womb: Revealing the Consciousness from Conception to Birth.

5 Reasons Why Reading Is Important

Reading is important

I remember being reminded constantly by my parents as well as my teachers about why reading was important. Now as an adult, I realize reading is important and that they were correct in instilling this in me.  Although the media and technology has made it so much easy for us but nothing can replace reading.

Here are 5 reasons why reading is important.

1. Reading improves your imagination and creativity

Reading exposes you to a world of imagination. Imagination which is also called the faculty of imagining is the ability to form new images and sensations in the mind. It is said that are not perceived through senses such as sight, hearing, or other senses showing you nothing is impossible in this world. Reading helps you explore a different perspective and how different actions leads to different result. People who read a lot are adding more to their knowledge base and thus structuring new solutions and answers.

2. Reading helps with linking your brain

Our brain which is functions as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual activity is being linked to an author. It appears possible that reading can improve the “connectivity” between the various brain circuits that are essential to understanding the written word. It is said that simply reading a good novel can keep that enhanced “connectivity” working for days, and possibly longer, after we have finished the book.

3. Reading improves your understanding

The more you read, the more you understand one thing. If you are reading about snakes and their habits, you will get to know which snakes are harmful and which are not. You will learn about what happens if you get bitten by a harmful snake. Reading also increases the understanding of the rules of life, in order for you to adapt, adopt, accommodate, assimilate, and acculturate into the society better. To play well in a game, you first need to understand the rules well. Reading also helps you understand the world, its various cultures, customs, and traditions. So when you meet people from other countries etc., you have a better understanding of them.

4. Reading improves your communication

Communication is the most important tool which can be transmitted through reading. As you communicate through reading, you comprehend more, and thus you can communicate better with people. As with a person that knows nothing, he/she hasn’t had anything to share, and he/she probably doe not even understand what people are sharing. Through reading, you form a more solid foundation for communication. It is one of the most important tools we use every day to connect with people. if you don’t read, you can’t even connect with the world and what people are talking about out there. Reading connects you with the world.

5. Reading teaches you new things

Through reading, you expose yourself to new things, new information, new ways to solve problems, and new ways to achieve one thing. Who knows – you might discover your new hobby. Who knows – you might actually explore one thing you really like and it may end up becoming your career and success in the future. Exploration, probing, and examining begin from reading and understanding.

The early reminder of our parents and teachers that reading is important should be conveyed to our children and grandchildren. I hope we will not replace reading with other activities that will prevent us from reading. The 5 reasons in this post are compelling enough to conclude that reading is important and to make reading part of our lives. Happy reading!

The Kindle Voyage – the good, bad, and the bottom line.

Here are three things about the kindle that I want to share with you – The Good, bad, and the bottom line.

THE GOOD is the top of Amazon’s e-reader line: it’s the company’s lightest touchscreen model ever, with the best resolution and contrast to date, better built-in lighting, a flush glass front and dedicated page-turn buttons.

THE BAD It’s not a huge upgrade over the Kindle Paperwhite, but it costs more. And you’ll pay extra still for a case, which is not included.

Software Update for Kindle Voyage, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle

I came across this on amazon and thought I would pass this on to you. It is from Jeff H from amazon and he makes the following announcement:

“We have a free software update available for Kindle Voyage, Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation), the previous generation Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle (7th Generation).
In addition to performance improvements for your Kindle, new features include:

Smart Cards
A redesigned Smart Lookup makes it easier to get to the actions you want to take while reading – highlight, create a note, share a quote, and more, while keeping your favorite Smart Lookup features like Dictionary, Wikipedia, and X-Ray easily accessible. Just tap and hold on a word, phrase, or sentence to bring up Smart Lookup and swipe right to see the next card.

Reading Improvements
These reading improvements are:
~Bookerly, a new font specifically designed for digital screens and tailored for Kindle books, is now available on Kindle Voyage, the previous generation Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle (7th Generation), in addition to Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation). It introduces a lighter, more graceful look that’s akin to the best traditional fonts found in print books.

~Improved word spacing, which results in faster, easier reading across all fonts. When words are unevenly spaced on a line of text, or the spacing between words varies from line to line, it’s harder for the eye to scan a passage of text while reading. So Amazon’s new technology uses advanced rules for breaking words across lines with hyphenation while adjusting the space between words, to create paragraphs that are more even and consistent line to line.

~Improved character placement, which increases word-recognition speed. Digital fonts in browsers lack the subtle variable adjustments between characters that make high-quality print materials look great. Amazon’s reading technology now applies kerning, which looks at neighboring pairs of letters in context and adjusts the character spacing to suit the word.

~Large font optimizations, which reduce visual distractions when customers choose larger font. The text is automatically left aligned to reduce gaps, and margins, indents, nested lists, borders and drop caps all get special treatment to keep the page easy to read with less effort.

~Enhanced page layout with typographically correct drop caps, and images and graphics that fit the page as the author meant them to be displayed, scaling correctly to reflect the page size and the customer’s preferred font size.

~Footnotes, endnotes and chapter notes are displayed in a pop up panel, either at the bottom of the page when the note will fit in the bottom-third of the page, or full screen if the note will not fit in the bottom-third of the page.

Personalized Recommendations on Goodreads on Kindle

Now you can access book recommendations personalized just for you inside the Goodreads app on your Kindle. The Goodreads algorithms analyze more than 20 billion data points and deliver surprising suggestions-all to help you find the book you’ll want to read next. If you haven’t used recommendations on Goodreads before, simply tell us your favorite genres and rate some books, and we’ll provide you with personalized recommendations. To learn more about a recommended title, just tap on the book cover to see more details. The more books you rate, the better your recommendations will be!”

These features will be delivered automatically as part of a free, over-the-air software update in the coming weeks, or you can visit http://www.amazon.com/kindlesoftwareupdates to download the software update starting today”
